Learn to crochet (poem)

Here is my latest poem

Learn to crochet

Grab yourself a ball of yarn
and a crocheting hook
You will also need
a good instructional book.

First you make a slipknot
then you make a chain
How to make other stitches
The book will explain.

When you’ve mastered the basics
It time to try out your skill
Your first completed garment
Will bring you a big thrill.

The Kookaburra in the old gum tree song legal case

I have no financial interest in this case.  Today I listened twice to the 70’s hit song, which the judge decided took part of the Kookaburra song, and which he then awarded part of the royalties to the owner of the Kookaburra song. For the life of me, I can’t see any part of the Kookaburra song in the other song.  I wonder how the judge can.

(Today the hit song was played twice on the radio on 2ch in Sydney.)

Invoke your Guardian Angel (poem)

Give your angel
some work to do
he will not mind at all.
Invoke him in all situations
whether big or small.

Send him in ahead of you
to prepare and smooth your way
and take care of all the details
that crop up in your day.

Talk to your angel
as you’d talk to a friend
and his wonderful assistance
to you he’ll extend.

Help the Holy Souls in Purgatory and read inspiring stories of their powerful intercession for their benefactors.

An Ash Wednesday story

One Ash Wednesday a few years ago, I went straight from Mass to a doctor’s appointment, without being conscious of the fact that the ashes were still on my forehead.

During the appointment the doctor started starting at my face and I wondered what was wrong, so I asked him.  He then asked me if I had washed my face today!  I was so embarrassed!  A hasty explanation about Ash Wednesday followed.  The doctor is Vietnamese and I think that he is a Buddhist.

How to Starve off Senility (poem)

To starve off senility
I suggest you write a poem.
It will help to avoid
the early twilight zone.
Try reading books upside-down
Do the crosswords everyday.
These little exercises keep
grey matter from decay.
Update
A clever man over at Catholic Forum has written two  more verses for the poem.

Sorting clothes for the washing machine

I just put a load of clothes that were coloured black into the washing machine, so that they were separate from clothes of other colours and so that there would not be problems.  One paper tissue in the pocket of one of the track pants brought me down.  Every items is covered in white fluff.  I have been shaking the wet clothing to get it out, but it has not been totally successful. It is a disaster! Learn from my mistake. I will buy a brush to try and remove the remaing white fluff.

Remember to check the pockets for tissues before putting the item into the washing machine!

Does anyone have a clever solution to my problem?

Devonshire tea (something to try for afternoon tea)

IMG_1007

Devonshire tea consists of scones, with strawberry or raspberry jam and (thickened) whipped cream (that has a bit of vanilla essence and some caster sugar mixed in).  It is served with a cup of tea.
